Fundraisers for Palestinian liberation: We owe Palestinians our money and support

For those of us outside of Gaza, we are witnessing the U.S.-backed, Israeli-imposed mass starvation and famine of Palestinians in Gaza. Prism has published dispatches from Gaza detailing how journalists have had to sell their cameras and entire photo archives to survive and feed their children. As of yesterday, 154 people in Gaza have died of starvation. One writer details how starvation has weakened their bodies and fueled depression. Israel has decimated the banking system in Gaza, so even cash is hard to come by when there is food available to buy. Palestinians have had to turn to fundraisers run by friends, families, and even strangers outside of Gaza, and accessing the funds is extremely difficult, with fees reaching 52% of the entire amount if it’s an international money transfer.

As a nonprofit independent news organization, we run twice-yearly fundraisers for Prism. However, we have made the decision to pause our mid-year fundraising and ask that you focus your donation efforts on mutual aid and on-the-ground organizations operating in Gaza. Prism is fine, our U.S. writers and staff are fed, housed, and safe, but our friends in Gaza are not. We cannot justify fundraising for ourselves while Israel starves Gaza. Those in power continue to take our tax dollars and funnel them into weaponry that has killed and injured hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Our tax dollars and the U.S.’ political support of Israel enable the occupying force to kill an average of 30 children every single day. We owe Palestinians our support when our taxes enable the elimination of their loved ones, families, friends, schools, beloved pets, hospitals, doctors, nurses, homes, cafes, sanctuaries, places of worship—their lives.
